   Nonprofit Organizations

The nonprofit sector has experienced immense growth in the last decade. Today, there are more than 3 million tax-exempt entities nationally that employ nearly 25 percent of all workers in the United States. In addition, over 20% of all securities are held in tax-exempt employee plans. Nonprofit organizations play an increasingly central role in providing our communities with needed services and amenities. Without nonprofit organizations, our communities would lack many of the cultural, educational, religious, research, and philanthropic initiatives upon which our citizens rely. 

Due to their tremendous growth and the growing sophistication of their activities, nonprofit organizations are coming under increasing scrutiny by federal and state governments, the Internal Revenue Service and the courts. Recently, this heightened scrutiny has taken the form of broad examinations and audits of nonprofit organizations by the Internal Revenue Service, the proposed introduction of comprehensive new federal legislation in Congress, and a market response to the activities of nonprofit organizations currently occurring in the courts.
